Three Ways to Do Monochrome

One of my favorite trends of the season is the monochromatic look – and it can be any color you choose.  Seasonal favorites this year are burgundy (frequently referred to this year as ‘oxblood’; I much prefer the terms ‘burgundy ‘or ‘bordeaux’), rich jewel tones such as royal blue, emerald green and purple, and of course winter white.  But it really doesn’t matter which color you choose – what matters is that it is a color that looks good on you.  Plus – this is a look that any body type can wear.  If you’ve been shopping wisely, buying items in your best colors and figure-flattering styles, you probably have just what you need in your closet right now to put a look together today. (If not, let me know if you’d like some help pulling an outfit together -I’d love to help!)

Tips to make this look work:  1) Vary your tonality just a bit – for example, your winter whites don’t have to match exactly, they just need to be all warm or all cool in tone.  2) Generally speaking, vary your textures – this adds visual interest.  While an all-cashmere outfit in burgundy isn’t a bad choice per se, it might be more interesting if you mixed the cashmere with silk or perhaps leather. And speaking of leather, you probably don’t want to wear an all-leather monochromatic outfit unless you’re preparing to hit the road on your Harley.  3) Add in pops of metallic – whether in hardware on your jacket or purse or shoes, and of course, with your jewelry. These add further visual interest.

The three outfits below illustrate the monochromatic technique in winter white – the same pants can be worn for all three occasions. Just changing out the tops, shoes and handbags creates a variety of looks.  Go ahead – give it a try – you’ll be surprised how easy it is!
